This painting was another accident. Started out as an abstract and then a storm arrived. Acrylic on canvas, 22x28”. DM for purchase inquiries otherwise this one’s hangin at my house.
The Lady Mozzarella, Duchess of Primrose, ready for her exclusive cover profile (photographed in her home by Annie Leibovitz). The interview will touch on her newly remodeled pied-à-terre in the Pacific Northwest, her philosophy on hosting weekend dog guests (spoiler: she’s anti) and the real reason why she didn’t attend the royal wedding.
In light of spending Mother’s Day with her, and the awful news coming from her homeland this week, here is an illustration of my grandma (my “tété”)- and my connection to Palestine. She was born in Bethlehem, and lived in Jerusalem with her family until violence broke out when Israel gained statehood. Her family went to Damascus to wait it out, on a vacation. They never got to go home, and instead, she came to the US and made a life here. _
• I grew up with a bazillion second cousins, baklava for dessert, homemade hummus at every gathering, with za’atar in the pantry, and being told to “yalla habibti” a lot. But I’ve never been to Bethlehem, or Jerusalem, and when I went to the Dead Sea it was from the Jordanian side. I also grew up saying proudly, “I’m half-Palestinian,” but on a visit to Jordan, a Palestinian cousin firmly corrected the stateside contingent: “no, you are not. If you aren’t living the daily horror, if you can travel in and out freely, you do not get to say you are Palestinian.” I just say I’m half Arab, now. __________________________ • Guys, I don’t have an answer and I don’t really have a horse in this race. I studied all of this in college and tried to learn Arabic and thought maybe it was going to somehow drive my career or drive me to some deeper understanding of my familial roots. It didn’t, and I’m further away than ever from understanding or being connected to this conflict- but as an American, I think our moving the embassy was wrong. And as a human, I think massacre of protestors- of a marginalized group- is shameful. And as an artist who loves her tété and this family, I just wanted to share this I guess.
Everyone, this is our new Jade plant. his name is Sebastian because he looks like he should be ...under the sea. 🦀
Sometimes you just have to spend an afternoon alone at the art museum to collect yourself and draw some super old statues.
Ok but who wore it better? (There’s some stiff competition in the second photo...)
I’m tempted to apologize for this mooshy post because I know we all roll our eyes at them (just me? Cool cool cool) but sometimes I’m just so overwhelmed by the good person and partner @mastrella7 is that I want to shout about it. I have made some monumentally dumb decisions in my dating life so it’s an actual miracle I got this one so right. I’m grateful every day.
Also- a gentle quarterly reminder that Instagram never tells the whole story- but I’m sharing this joyful moment because sometimes life is hard and sad outside of these squares and it’s ok to want to celebrate and elevate the good bits.
If you’re going through a tough time, hold your heart gently, someone else’s hand tightly, breathe deeply and know you aren’t alone. And if you have a human or animal to cuddle in a blanket that helps, too.
Quick brush play to warm up the head, the hands and the heart. The rest of the day:: calligraphy ‘til I drop and finally listening to the I’ll Be Gone in the Dark audiobook.
Our Bohemian days as mattress-on-the-floor-people have officially come to a close. We’re now approximately 8-10” off the ground so we naturally expect our whole lives to change. Also did not plan this purchase super well what with taxes and all but sometimes after 7 months of sleeping with your face way too close to the heating register, amidst dust bunnies of dog hair on the floor, you just gotta make that call! Counting down the minutes til bedtime.🛏💤
