Thanks so much to all of you who reached out with a kindness upon hearing my bummer news earlier this week. So many of you shared your own experiences with the death of loved ones - many of which were a lot more unexpected or painfully drawn out than losing an aged grandparent to natural causes, and I want to say thank you for being vulnerable and open and I’d like to send this card to each of you. 💙
It’s one of the simplest, most straightforward cards in the #jrocroxpe line and we wanted it that way because sometimes it’s all that needs to be said.

It’s with crushing sadness that I have to share that we lost my Tete, Juliette, last week. It was very unexpected and without any warning signs, despite the fact that she was 89 years old (please don’t tell her I told you her age). We’re still in shock and only just starting to feel the enormous hole her tiny self has left in our lives.

Despite all my recent posts about cleaning out her house and all its treasures, she was in good health and just transitioning to an apartment in a retirement community. I’ve seen her a lot these past few weeks, picked her up for Mother’s Day dinner, had a meal at her new place, eaten ice cream sandwiches on her “davenport” while watching tv, listened to her dozens of admonishments per hang-out to “be careful” with this pregnancy, to not overdo it, to rely on Matt. If you knew her, you knew to expect the Little General to boss you around and that she was usually right. I felt so lucky to still be the target of her directives, to sit with her, to live so near, that Matt has gotten to know and be loved by her.
The oldest girl of her 10 siblings, an emigrant from the upheaval of stability in the Middle East, a widowed mother of 4 kids- she was a little, elegant, fiercely independent woman with a big personality. She loved nice things, bragging on her family, and having her nails done bright red. She spoke 3 languages, worked past her 89th birthday at a boutique downtown, and was always better dressed than anyone in the room, even in her pajamas. She was Auntie Jou-Jou to dozens of nieces and nephews, and a Tete to 4 of us.
This little baby I’m carrying would have been her first great-grandchild. Not a milestone we all get, but one I was looking forward to giving her. That stings a lot. It’s really hard watching my mama lose hers, a few months before becoming one myself.

But, as my agreat-aunt said to us when we told her the news, “I’m 93! She was 89! What more do you want from us!?” Nothing. Not a thing. You did it, you’ve done it, you’ve given us everything and we will love you in memory and legacy with the fierceness that you loved us.
You’ll be missed deeply, and daily.

Smattering of commissioned work the past few weeks. New career highlight: drawing a very tolerant capybara being smothered by curious monkeys!

Baby got a glow up✨ I dunno what snapped in me yesterday but I finally grabbed a paintbrush and lost some sentimentality and did what I’d been threatening to do for months: I painted over some of the most egregious swatches of color sin in this enormous canvas o’ controversy. 👩🏻‍🎨 I stopped before I got carried away but imagine there will be another session to further neutralize this beast. I think it helped a little?? Whose art is it now? Did I add value to the piece or “ruin” another artist’s work? Do I even care?!???

My Tete has never had time for hobbies. She was too busy working and raising 4 kids after her husband passed away too young. In fact, she only stopped working last month, after turning 89. (...!?) Cleaning out her house it’s clear she had interests she could have pursued- we keep finding little collections of beautiful things like this tin stuffed full of stamps. She carefully tore them off correspondence from friends and family in far off places- Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Greece, France, Italy, Bolivia are all represented here. In lieu of activities it’s obvious that she has always been an appreciator of beauty - a trait I think I’ve inherited from her, either by nature or nurture. Of course I’m the one who pounced on this collection and will hoard them until my own children find them in a drawer someday.

Back from 10 lovely days in London where we picked up a little souvenir...!
(Technically we picked it up in November and it’ll arrive in August but you get the idea). We are nervous/thrilled/excited/overjoyed, of course. And if you see this and it makes you a little bitter or sad, I see you. I hear you. I’ve been there. It is constantly a marvel to me how we ended up with so many people on this planet when the road to human-making is so much more fraught than we ever talk about.

Right now, though, I’m choosing not to let my fear bully my joy, and I’m focusing on where my next pastry is coming from.
